The Sun, the Elephants, and the Mice

A pessimist looks for mice and is trampled by elephants. An optimist looks at the sun, trips over mice, and is trampled by elephants. A pragmatic person sees the sun, the elephants, and the mice—and gives each the attention it deserves.

The lesson is simple: what you choose to focus on matters, but so does what you choose to ignore.

The pessimist sees the risks and misses the opportunities. The optimist sees the opportunities but overlooks the risks. Both allow one part of reality to dominate their decisions.

The pragmatic person does something different. They appreciate the sun, recognize the elephants, and watch where they step around the mice. They don’t let the dangers erase the opportunities, and they don’t let the opportunities blind them to the dangers.

This applies to leadership, business, and everyday life. We can spend too much time managing small problems while missing major threats. We can chase an exciting opportunity without recognizing its risks. Or we can become so focused on what might go wrong that we never move forward.

Pragmatism isn’t about being negative or positive. It’s about seeing things as they are, understanding what matters most, and responding accordingly.

The goal isn’t to give everything equal attention. It’s to give everything the attention it deserves.

So, what are you focused on today—and what might you be missing?
